The Boulder

2020

paper mache, cardboard, wood, person (optional)

I think fondly of this piece as a starting point. Crafted several months into the pandemic, The Boulder was an attempt at humor: a hide-a-key large enough to fit a person inside. Hide-a-keys are funny things, intended to be inconspicuous in order to protect something valuable. Conversely, the Boulder was comically conspicuous in a gallery or studio space (or anywhere, really). It became a place to hide: a paper facade ready to envelop me, or anyone else.
