Sprinkles (Eat Me)

2018

Stan’s Donuts box, vase, pedestal, sprinkles

Also known as Eat Me, this was one of the first sculptures I made at SAIC. We had been assigned to revise our previous project, and had been given two weeks to do it. I have some crappy video documentation of Two Donuts Kissing in the Rain somewhere; maybe I’ll link it here eventually.

I remember crafting and painting this pedestal just for this project, and when my fellow students arrived and saw my piece, sitting closed, they were shocked. “Where did you find a pedestal so clean?!” they asked. The school’s pedestals were typically scuffed, dirty, and marked with smudges from various mediums, and as freshman we were unaware that we could check out retouching kits, so my piece stood out on its glowing pedestal. I kept my mouth shut.

(When I opened it, they were even more shocked, thinking at first that I had cut a hole in a school pedestal altogether.)

In this piece, I discovered my love of “the reveal.”
