Breaking Ground
2021
screen printed muslin, starch, hardware cloth, found shovel
This project evolved from another project: a series of embossings I made entitled Carved Again.
In Carved Again, I carved my most public self-harm scars into a piece of linoleum, then embossed them, mirroring my scars onto paper. Embossing was especially effective as a medium because of the raised nature of my scars.
I photographed Carved Again, then manipulated and overlayed the photos in Adobe Illustrator. After screen-printing the resulting file on muslin, I ripped it up, molding the fabric over hardware cloth. To solidify it, I brushed on liquid starch and secured it with stitches.
Breaking Ground attempts to explore growth, self-harm, healing, and the pain associated with it all.
