Passage

Hand-dyed fabric, embroidery floss, starch

Back when I was in high school I found the YouTube channel of a “mathemusician”: Vi Hart. Vi Hart would post fascinating and engaging videos, merging art and food and nature and sound with math, a lot of geometry. I first found her through her video on flexagons, then hexaflexagons, and I was smitten.

Years later, while taking a bookmaking class, I would learn again how to make a flexagon, but having already experimented with paper, I opted for a different material: fabric I had dyed myself. I measured, embroidered, stitched, and stiffened with liquid starch. Thus was born Passage.
